You can see on the right that there are many similar styles of mustaches and thereby the name “French” could be incorrect. Mustaches styles I have found that could be relevant: Imperial, Handlebar & Dali.
When trying to find different mustache images under the Italian term “mustachio” I received mostly results with the style of what is in my painting, Handlebar. But, in the English term “mustache”, or French term “moustache” I received different kinds. So, perhaps the “mustachio” is another nickname for Handlebar.
Handlebar is a heavy moustache with sections particularly lengthy and upwardly curved extremities. These moustache styles are named for their resemblance to the handlebars of a bicycle. It is also known as a spaghetti moustache, because of its stereotypical association with Italian men. The etymology is from “handle” (n.) + “bar” (n.1; like “stake” or “rod”). Sometimes it also being called “Hook” mustache after the famous fictional character of Captain Hook.
I think that like the handlebars that are for the steering and more importantly grabbing the bicycle, similarly, “Hook” garbs whatever it is being hang on to it.
