Victimization: The Criminal Justice System, Sex & Society

Before us is a book characterized by a panoramic view, interdisciplinary analysis, and reference to the points of view of perpetrators, victims, and observers of victimizing events.

The interaction between the three perspectives is expressed through a collection of articles dealing with law enforcement, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation, in the broader social context of the phenomenon of victimization. The book’s interdisciplinary perspective stems from the diverse professional backgrounds of the authors: sociologists, criminologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers, and social workers, including senior officials in the Israel Police.

The reader is exposed to the great complexity of the field of victimization. The articles refer to the phenomenon of sexual abuse of children, to clinical syndromes that appear with high frequency after sexual trauma, and to clinical characteristics that may appear later on. Findings are also presented about people who confessed to a crime even though they were not involved in it. The article tells of “whistleblowers” who exposed corruption and shortcomings in their organization but were punished for it. Stereotypical perceptions intended to deny or justify male aggression towards women are documented. Omissions that allow false complaints by women against men to become solid and valid accusations are reported. The ambiguous status of Palestinian female security prisoners serving prison sentences in Israeli prisons is discussed.

The book points to the resourcefulness of victims, as it describes Druze women who renounce violent husbands and succeed in obtaining a divorce while exploiting and exhausting normative limitations. It reveals methods that may help a person convicted of sexual offenses to avoid returning and harming additional victims. Within the framework of the world of trafficking and prostitution, individual and group treatments designed to foster empowerment among victims are detailed. The contribution of the police to promoting the fight against terrorism in a school setting is presented. Ways are outlined that allow prisoners to renounce victim thinking. In conclusion, the authors of the book attempt to make amends where injustice has been done.

לפנינו מונח ספר המאופיין במבט פנורמי, בניתוח בין-תחומי ובהתייחסות לנקודות הראות של מקרבנים, קורבנות וצופים בהתרחשויות מקרבנות.

האינטראקציה בין שלוש נקודות הראות באה לידי ביטוי באמצעות אסופה של מאמרים העוסקים באכיפת החוק, בהטרדה מינית ובניצול מיני, בהקשר החברתי הרחב של תופעת הקרבנות. המבט האינטר-דיסציפלינארי של הספר נובע מהרקע המקצועי המגוון של כותבי המאמרים: סוציולוגים, קרימינולוגים, פסיכולוגים, פסיכיאטרים, עורכי דין ועובדים סוציאליים, ביניהם בכירים במשטרת ישראל.

הקורא נחשף למורכבות הרבה של תחום הקרבנות. המאמרים מתייחסים לתופעה של פגיעה מינית בילדים, לתסמונות קליניות המופיעות בתדירות גבוהה לאחר הטראומה המינית ולמאפיינים קליניים העלולים להופיע בהמשך הדרך. מוצגים גם ממצאים אודות אנשים שהודו בפשע הגם שהם לא היו מעורבים בו. מסופר על “מתריעים בשער” שחשפו שחיתויות ומחדלים בארגונם אך נענשו בשל כך. מתועדות תפיסות סטריאוטיפיות המיועדות להכחיש או להצדיק תוקפנות גברית כלפי נשים. מדווחים מחדלים המאפשרים תלונות שווא של נשים כלפי גברים להיהפך לאישומים שרירים וקיימים. נערך דיון במעמד הדו-ערכי של אסירות ביטחוניות פלסטיניות המרצות עונשי מאסר בכלא הישראלי.

הספר מצביע על תושיית הקורבנות, כאשר הוא מתאר נשים דרוזיות המתנערות מבעלים אלימים ומצליחות לזכות בגט תוך ניצול ומיצוי המגבלות הנורמטיביות. נחשפות בו שיטות העשויות לסייע לאדם שהורשע בעבירות מין להימנע מלשוב ולפגוע בקורבנות נוספים. במסגרת עולם הסחר והזנות מפורטים טיפולים פרטניים וקבוצתיים המיועדים לטפח העצמה בקרב הנפגעות. מוצגת תרומת המשטרה לקידום המאבק נגד טרור במסגרת בית-ספרית. מסורטטות דרכים המאפשרות לאסירים להתנער מחשיבה קרבנית. לסיכום, מחברי הספר מנסים לחולל תיקון במקום שבו נעשה עוול.
